DESY scientist Stephan Roth, who holds also an adjunct professor position at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (Sweden), received the Science Award for his scientific contribution at the 13th ‘Coatings Science International’ (COSI 2017) conference. The conference took place from 26-30 June 2017 in Nordwijk (The Netherlands).

Stephan Roth has developed an in situ, real-time X-ray method for studying the surface nanostructuring of functional spray coatings. He investigated for instance the colloidal structuring caused by the coating and drying process during the production of organic solar cells. The new X-ray method enables a deeper insight into the processes and allows the elimination of the so-called coffee-ring effect. This is an unwanted effect in the field of coating technologies and beyond. A distinct pattern, e.g. a ‘coffee-ring’, of previously dissolved solids shows up after the evaporation of the liquid solvent.

DESY's Research Director for Photon Science, Edgar Weckert, congratulates Stephan Roth for being awarded: "It shows the importance of the new method for technological developments in the field of Science and Technology of Coatings."
