Standalone use of the LVP (no X-rays)

Application procedure

To apply for offline use of the LVP please contact the Beamline Manager (Robert Farla).

Applications must include:
1) a Short Proposal of the project
2) a completed Proposal Form
.

Please consider a maximum number of shifts for the whole project with the aim of a publication at the end. This can include multiple visits to the beamline over a period of a year, for instance. Furthermore, you will discuss with the Beamline Manager the feasibility of the project and the best plan of action.

Staff at the beamline are happy to assist you prepare and run the experiments, but we expect a certain level of user experience with multianvil techniques. In the case of first-time users, who have no multianvil experience, you are requested to visit the beamline prior to starting the project to familiarize yourself with the techniques. Any beamline staff involved in your experiments would appreciate to be included in an eventual publication of the research. We thank you for your understanding.

Next steps

After initial discussions with the Beamline Manager the following will happen:

  1. The PI and his team should be registered in DOOR.
  2. After emailing the application form and the short proposal (above) to the Beamline Manager, a proposal is created in DOOR and the Users will be notified.
  3. The PI of the project should log into DOOR and apply for LVP special instrument use under "Submission of experiment specifications for additional proposal types at our facilities". The Proposal should be listed there. If not, after some reasonable time, please remind the Beamline Manager.
  4. Using the application form in DOOR, the PI will submit the instrument specification, planned set up and preferred dates for their visit, as discussed with the Beamline Manager.
  5. NEW! The user can also apply for access to the DESY NanoLab (e.g. for post-analysis of samples by SEM or EBSD). To ensure access is scheduled, you MUST inform Dr. Farla (the BL manager) right away. Access to the NanoLab is NOT guaranteed unless agreed between you, Dr. Farla and the contact person at the NanoLab.
  6. DOOR will notify the PI that the experiment dates have been confirmed by the Beamline Manager.
  7. Before arrival for LVP experiments, like all other beamtime users, the PI and his team must complete the DOOR safety training*, declaration of substances, and other necessary tasks (see below).
  8. The PI and his team are expected to arrive 1 day before the day planned for the first experiment, even earlier if no preparation work (like building of assemblies) was done!
  9. The PI submits an experiment report in DOOR after each visit within reasonable time (< 6 months). Reports help the PI to receive experiment time in the future!

The DOOR Proposal of the PI remains active until all shifts for the project have been used up. For a follow-up future visit, the PI should go back to Step 3 and complete the instructions again. Keep in mind, a new project requires a new Proposal, restarting the application process from the beginning!

The proposal describing the project is NOT externally peer-reviewed, unlike for beam time! We do follow an internal review process. Therefore, reimbursement for travel and accommodation is not possible.

Requirements

[1] *You MUST do the BASIC and PETRA III safety training modules.
For use of the benchtop XRD you must do in addition:
MECHANICALS (Workshop) and X-RAY GENERATORS.

[2] If you require P61B to offer you cell assemblies, anvils and other consumables for your experiments, you MUST inform the beamline personnel AT LEAST 5 WEEKS IN ADVANCE of your planned visit! Clearly communicate your choice of assembly (e.g. 20/15, 18/10, 14/7, or 10/4), choice of heater, and minor custom modifications. Preparation of the assembly parts is time-consuming work! Thermocouples will not be prepared in advance, as this is extra work.

[3] For 1st time visit: A DACHS card can be obtained in bldg. 6, R110. Bring proof of identity! A DACHS card allows for independent access to the sample preparation lab (when activated by the Beamline Manager). See more info here .

[4] For accommodation, please visit the website of the DESY guesthouse to make a reservation. Do not wait until the last moment!

[5] Please observe the COVID19 healthy and safety rules prior to your visit. See the FS user area page for the latest information!
