A Multi-Purpose end-station for Electron- and Ion-Spectroscopy, Pump-Probe, and Imaging Experiments

BL1 beamline transmission for two different sets of coatings on the transport mirrors. The KB focusing optics are Nickel coated and under 3° grazing incidence.

The CAMP@FLASH instrument [1] is a permanent end-station installed at beamline BL1 in the FLASH1 hall, that is available to FLASH users through regular proposals.
The instruments modular and flexible layout allows using detection schemes employing large-area, single-photon counting pnCCD photon-detectors [2] with VMI- and COLTRIMS-type electron and ion spectrometers. In addition, user provided instrumentation and target delivery systems can be mounted to the instrument via large CF250 ports perpendicular to the FEL-beam axis. The beamline BL1 also has a permanent laser setup providing collinear laser in-coupling optics, a grating-compressor for pulse length control, optional SHG, THG, and FHG for creating 405nm, 271nm, and 202nm pulses, as well as diagnostics for the FLASH pump-probe laser. A pair of nickel-coated KB mirrors allows focusing the FEL radiation over the entire wavelength range available at FLASH1 to a spot size of 7µm x 8µm (hor/ver, measured at 13.5nm).

Experiments at FLASH have to be conducted at UHV vacuum conditions. Please be aware of the vacuum guidelines for FLASH experiments. For more information regarding the FLASH1 pump-probe laser please consult the respective web pages.


Additional Information on available equipment:

pnCCD detectors: CAMP is equipped with two large-area (78 x 74 mm²), single-photon counting 1 Megapixel pnCCD detectors (75 x 75 µm² pixel size), which collect scattered and fluorescent photons with high quantum efficiency and an energy resolution of 40 to 200 eV between <100 eV and 25 keV at a frame read-out rate up to 200 Hz. A variable-sized gap/hole in the center of the first CCD allows the direct FEL beam (and a high-power pump-probe laser, if applicable) to pass through the detector, while the small-angle scattering signal within the area of the hole can be detected on the second CCD, which has a fixed-diameter hole for the direct FEL beam. Both pnCCD detectors can be removed individually if they are not needed in order to provide more flexibility inside the chamber as well as better vacuum.

Electron and ion spectrometers: A suite of double-sided electron and ion imaging spectrometers (time-of-flight, velocity map imaging (VMI), and COLTRIMS/‘reaction microscope’ spectrometers) are available to detect ions and/or electrons of up to a few hundred eV kinetic energy within the full 4pi solid angle, while its conical electrodes provide an unrestricted line-of-sight from the interaction region to the pnCCD detectors. The spectrometers use 80mm MCP detectors that can be operated with delay-line anodes for coincident, momentum-resolved single particle detection or with MCP/phosphor screen detectors that are read-out at 10 Hz by CCD cameras.

Sample environment: The instrument offers 4 large open ports (CF250) for user provided sample environments or additional instrumentation. This includes gas-phase atomic or molecular beams (cw and pulsed), solid sample holder, cluster sources (rare gases, metal clusters), nano-particle aerodynamic-lens injectors, and many others.
