On the occasion of the DESY Photon Science Users’ meeting 2025, Yongjae Lee was honoured with the second 'DESY Photon Science User Award'. This award is given to a user or group of users of FLASH and/or PETRA III and acknowledges singular and exceptional contributions to the general advancement of science using DESY’s large-scale photon science facilities.

Yongjae Lee is professor at the department of Earth System Sciences of the Yonsei University, Seoul (Korea). He was selected for the DESY Photon Science User Award 2025 for “his innovative and pioneering research of water-mediated reactions of hydrous minerals under extreme conditions, giving new insight into processes occurring in the interior of the Earth and other planets”. His research at high pressures and temperatures at the PETRA III beamlines P02.2 and P61B as well as at the HED station at European XFEL is truly innovative and opened up new research areas. The results are consistantly published in high-impact journals, demonstrating both the impact and novelty of his work.

The DESY Photon Science User award is presented annually. The DESY Photon Science User Committee (DPS-UC) and the DESY Photon Science award committee select the successful award winners. The award committee members are appointed by the DESY Photon Science directorate. The next call for applications will be in summer 2025.
