Data DOIs for PETRA III and FLASH Experiment Data

With the goal to issue persistent identifiers (DOIs) for data produced at DESY Photon Science user facilities a new service has been established in 2026 with strong support through DAPHNE4NFDI to fulfill the requirements derived from FAIR principles and to meet data availability policies of scientific publishers.
Well-curated high-level metadata will help to make datasets findable and increase the visibility of published data sets. Therefore, for 2026, a Data Steward service accompanying the DOI minting process is offered through professional data scientists which will also help optimizing workflows towards a further automated solution.

First step:

If you have data that you’d like to make publicly available, with its raw data originating at DESY Photon Science facilities please reach out to photon-doi@desy.de.

Details:

  • DOIs can only be issued for data that is present on DESY storage infrastructure
  • In order to process any request, a Proposal or Beamtime ID related to the concerned data is needed
  • Request must be issued by a member of the Proposal
  • Please anticipate sufficient time for data and meta-data curation
  • As a fast self-service solution for smaller datasets that have to be published timely, please also consider ZENODO for the time being.
  • The underlying “Desy Photon Science Scientific Data Policy” will be applied to experiments at DESY Photon Science facilities conducted from 2026 onwards. It is available here:
