Regulations for the access to PETRA III and FLASH are outlined below and in the pdf documents on the right hand side of this webpage.

Users with scheduled beamtimes will be informed regularly via e-mail about changes of regulations.

From now on, up to six persons are allowed for experiments at PETRA III, up to nine persons are allowed for experiments at FLASH.

Test requirements for users coming to PETRA III / FLASH

Users have to present a negative molecular biological PCR test for SARS-CoV-2 with the result being not older than 48 hrs when coming on campus. Vaccination or recovery from Covid-19 will not release users from this obligation.

General travel regulations for people coming to Germany

All persons coming from abroad have to provide a proof of vaccination/recovery or a negative test result, i.e. PCR-Test (max. 72h) or Antigen-Test (max. 48h).

All travellers coming from an international risk area as defined by German authorities have to register online via

Please note different regulations for
1) 'high incidence areas'
For persons coming from a high incidence area a 10-day quarantine is required. As soon as a proof of complete vaccination (with a vaccine accepted by the EU ) or of recovery is uploaded via the online travel registration, the quarantine can be terminated.
For persons without vaccination or recovery, the quarantine can be termined after 5 days by uploading a negative test result.

2) 'areas of variant of concern' NO VISIT AT DESY POSSIBLE!

DESY Hostel does not offer quarantine rooms for DESY users

NEW !!!!! Allowed number of participants per beamtime

From now on up to six experimenters can join for a beamtime visit at PETRA III. Not more than two persons should share a lab or be in the hutch at the same time. If for any reason the experiment can be conducted safely only with more than six persons please contact and to request an exceptional permission.

For FLASH not more than nine users can join for an experiment. For advice and exceptional permission for more persons please contact

Fast Track Access for research related to COVID-19 is possible

Synchrotron radiation sources and FELs offer cutting-edge research possibilities in all areas of applied and fundamental natural sciences and in the field of medical diagnosis. At present, PETRA III and FLASH host more than 20 beamlines and more than 60 experimental stations and setups. The main experimental applications comprise X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction or imaging, X-ray scattering, X-Ray protein crystallography, VUV/XUV spectroscopy/scattering and FEL experiments with soft X-rays (XUV).
