With the construction of the two Free-Electron Lasers: FLASH and the European XFEL, and the 6 GeV storage ring PETRA-3, DESY is a world leading center for photon science. An important aspect for the scientific success of these new sources will be the availability of well adapted detectors. The Photon Science Detector group (officially called: “FS-Detector Systems”) is responsible for the support and development of all detectors for photon science at DESY. Therefore, the tasks of the group include: - Development of novel detectors - Acquisition and adaptation of the best available detectors - Consultation to application (beamline) scientists - Operation of a detector loan pool The philosophy of the group is, whenever possible and beneficial, to collaborate with other groups at DESY, in Germany or international. The most recent overview of our groups activities.

Spin Off

In July 2014 the X-Spectrum GmbH was founded by five members of the DESY detector group with DESY being the sixth associate of this new enterprise. The scientists developed an X-ray area detector named LAMBDA, offering an extremely high spatial resolution and a high recording rate. LAMBDA stands for Large Area Medipix3 Based Detector Array. The large active area of the LAMBDA detector with the size of about nine by three centimetres is equipped with 750 000 pixels and takes up to 2000 images per second.  “High sensitivity, high resolution, high frame rate – thus, the detector precisely fulfils the requirements experimenters put on new generation synchrotron radiation detectors. “Moreover, the detector is suitable for photon energies up to about 100 kilo-electronvolts, which we have for example at PETRA III.” says one of the scientists. For comparison: This is about 40 000 times higher than the energy of visible light, which is for example recorded by the chip of an average digital camera. X-Spectrum GmbH is selling these detectors to the synchrotron market.
