ERC Consolidator Grant for DESY physicist Christoph Heyl
Christoph Heyl has received a 2 million euro ERC Consolidator Grant for his project "GASONIC," which explores using intense ultrasound waves to control light in the gas phase. The research aims to improve optical devices like modulators and switches, enabling higher light intensities in such sytems. The project will start in 2025 at DESY in Hamburg, with collaborations on ultrasound transducer development.

DESY Innovation Award for the Projekt “Gas-phase sono-photonic light control“.
This year's DESY Innovation Award goes to Christoph Heyl, who leads the Photonics Research and Innovation Group at DESY, and his team at DESY (Yannick Schrödel, Tino Lang), TU Darmstadt (Mario Kupnik, Sören Sönnecken, Claas Hartmann) and Aalen University (Regina Schuster, Anne Harth). Their joint project “Gas-phase sono-photonic light control” focuses on the contactless control of light in air or other gases through the use of intense ultrasonic waves.
