At DESY Photon Science in Hamburg (Germany), the new high brilliance synchrotron radiation source PETRA III will provide short-wavelength X-ray radiation of especially high brilliance. PETRA III will offer excellent research opportunities for various applications – from medicine to materials research. It took up user operation in 2010.
In addition a new device - the free-electron laser FLASH will offer extreme short and intense pulses in the soft X-ray regime and is in operation since 2005. Structural studies, especially using X-ray spectroscopy and diffraction, represent a main field of research at DESY Photon Science.
DESY, the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, and the University of Hamburg established together a Center for Free-Electron Laser Science CFEL on the DESY campus. CFEL will focus on developing and exploiting the scientific applications of the new radiation sources with outstanding properties.
The X-ray free-electron laser European XFEL will produce high-intensity ultra-short X-ray laser-like flashes. As an international project, it will be run by an independent research organization, the European XFEL GmbH. In this organization DESY is one shareholder with a share of more than 50 percent. Commissioning is due to start in 2015.
