Researchers from different disciplines are working together at DESY to create a dynamic environment for the development and implementation of novel and exciting ideas in photon science - the understanding of how light interacts with matter.

Reseachers from DESY Photon Science are also strongly engaged in teaching in academia, for example at the Universität Hamburg (UHH). It is Hamburg’s largest institute of higher education and other universities.

The emphasis of most lectures and seminars is on understanding the fundamental principles of photon science. Topics range from structure of matter, to more specific topics like condensed matter and surface physics, nanoscience, engineering and materials science. All PhD students are automatically members of a graduate school (like PIER or DASHH). Their training is here provided both with respect to the corresponding research work and also with respect to personal and professional skills.
