Mai
Julius Schwarz joins the group as part of the collaborative research center 1636. He did his Phd with Michael Martins at the University of Hamburg and is well known to the group as an URSA-PQ user. Welcome, Julius!
April
We had an intense month of beamtimes at LCLS with a lot of lessons learnt. But we came back successfully and have now data to analyze! Thanks to all collaborateurs for their efforts to make the beamtimes successful!

March
NEW PUBLICATION: We finally published our work on the time-resolved NEXAFS of 2-thiouracil! This is based on beamtimes we did at FLASH a few years ago. Read the publication here.
January
NEW PUBLICATION: We published the results from our SQS beamtime at EuXFEL in 2022! This work investigates the geometry changes of 2-thiouracil upon UV excitation using the Coulomb explosion imaging technique. Read the publication here.
2024
December
Miguel finally defended his PhD thesis! Congratulations!!
November
We hosted the Ultrafast Dynamics Imaging of Matter (UFDIM) conference.
Felix Allum joins the group as a Humboldt Fellow! He joins us from SLAC where he did a postdoc already. Now he wants to continue his research on Wolff photochemistry with us at FLASH. Welcome, Felix!
October
NEW PUBLICATION: We have published work on the static x-ray spectroscopy of thiouracils! This work explores the core-level photoelectron and absorption spectra of thionated uracils as a complement to our time-resolved studies. The data was taken at the PLEIADES beamline at SOLEIL in France a few years back. Read the publication here.
August
Miguel Silva joins the group for a postdoc. He did his Phd work in the group of Franz Kärtner at CFEL here in Hamburg working on high-harmonic laser sources. Welcome, Miguel!
Mai
We successfully tested the first Standardized Access Mode at FLASH using our endstation URSA-PQ. Four research collaborations got granted beamtime slots of 2 days with our instrument which where carried out within two consecutive weeks. Our group (PI: Xiaojun) got one of the slots. The others went to users from the SLAC, Stanford and Würzburg. Thanks to careful preparation in the weeks before and hard work during the beamtimes, all user could successfully finish their experiments!

Happy users from Würzburg (and France) during the successful SAM campaign at FLASH. Dennis (left), Fabiano (second from right) and Xiajoun (not in picture) handled the user support during the two weeks of beamtime.
We successfully finished a beamtime at the MeV-UED facility at SLAC.
March
Dennis supported the FEL-newbies from the group of Ingo Fischer from University of Würzburg on their beamtime at the Maloja endstation at SwissFEL.
January
NEW PUBLICATION: We have published a review article on the x-ray spectroscopy nucleobases! It covers our work over the past 10 years on thymine and thiouracil performed at FLASH and LCLS. Read the article here.
2023
October
Xiaojun Wang joins the group as a postdoc. He did his Phd in the group of Martin Centurion at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln where he build an electron diffraction as well as a mass spectrometry setup. Now he is curios to learn about our FEL science. Welcome, Xiaojun!
June
Fabiano and Dennis participated in this year's Ultrafast X-Ray Summer School at DESY.
February
A series of beamtimes at FERMI, EuXFEL and FLASH since October last year finds its end. We thank all the collaborateurs for the work to make these beamtimes successfull. We now have some time to analyze the data!
January
Fabiano Lever joins the group as a postdoc. He did is Phd at the University of Potsdam under the supervision of Markus and now rejoins us at DESY.
2022
December
Dennis Mayer joins the group as Postdoc after finishing his PhD at the University of Potsdam.
October
Markus Gühr joins FLASH at DESY as head scientist. Read the DESY announcement here.
