In its meeting on 11-12 December 2023, the DESY Administrative Council took note of the appointment of Prof. Franz X. Kärtner as acting Director in charge of Photon Science. Franz Kärtner takes over the leadership of this DESY division from Prof. Edgar Weckert, whose time as Director in charge of Photon Science will end as planned on 31 December 2023, after 16 years. He will continue his research work at DESY.
Franz Kärtner is well-known as a lead scientist at DESY and beyond. He heads the Ultrafast Optics and X-rays group in the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL) at DESY, is a professor at the University of Hamburg and has founded a deep-tech start-up (Cycle GmbH). Before coming to Hamburg, he taught and carried out research at the ETH Zürich, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The search for the Director in charge of Photon Science at DESY is expected to be completed in 2024.
