P61 High Energy wiggler beamline/LVP

P61 is open to applications for beam time | Large Volume Press (LVP) is also available to applications without X-rays (internal review only)

The X-ray source of beamline P61 is an array of ten 4m long fixed-gap damping wigglers which serve to reduce the machine emittance. The powerful white beam from these insertion devices is filtered by an absorber unit to reduce the total power load on the downstream optical elements. Essentially, the low-energy part of the spectrum (below about 40 keV) is cut off. However, still more than 50% of the total emitted power will still be present in the high-energy spectrum. The beam size can be adjusted by a high-power slit system in an optics hutch. The filtered white beam (“pink” beam) is guided to the experimental hutches downstream, which both employ energy dispersive X-ray techniques and radiography imaging.

In the first hutch, Hereon (formerly HZG) has instrumentation focused on materials science and engineering applications using energy dispersive X-ray techniques. Applications include surface diffraction using "Laplace space" methods, transmission diffraction with gauge volume control, and high speed imaging with high energy X-rays.

In the downstream hutch, DESY operates a large-volume press instrument (LVP) for studies of materials under extreme conditions. The instrument is available for both in situ studies with X-rays and ex situ studies ('offline'), e.g. for materials synthesis.
