Beamline P09 at PETRA III is dedicated to resonant X-ray diffraction in the tender and hard X-ray range with full polarization control, fast polarization switching and polarization analysis capabilities between 2.7 and 13.7 keV. It is equipped with two diffractometers as central instruments allowing it for diffraction in combination with unique cryogenic sample environments (high dc magnetic fields, low temperatures, high pressure).

In Experimental Hutch 1, the psi diffractometer allows it for diffraction in a vertical or horizontal scattering geometry. Closed-cycle cryostats covering the temperature range between 1.7 K and 700 K are available. Windowless operation allows for REXS experiments in the tender X-ray range (e.g. at the Ru LIII edge) in the vertical scattering geometry.

Experimental hutch 2 is equipped with a non magnetic heavy-load diffractometer allowing for larger and heavier cryostats and diffraction in the horizontal scattering geometry. A 14 Tesla split-coil cryomagnet equipped with a helium 4 variable temperature insert allows it for diffraction in high magnetic fields in a temperature range between 1.8 K and 293 K. A pulse tube cryostat operating between 4 and 293 K with large sample volume, optical access and low vibrations (< 4 microns) is available allowing it for instance for high pressure single-crystal diffraction experiments using diamond anvil cells (DACs) where pressure can be applied and monitored in situ.
