P09 Resonant Scattering and Diffraction beamline

Beamline P09 at PETRA III is dedicated to resonant X-ray diffraction in the tender and hard X-ray range with full polarization control, fast polarization switching and polarization analysis capabilities between 2.7 and 13.7 keV. It is equipped with two diffractometers as central instruments allowing it for diffraction in combination with unique cryogenic sample environments (high dc magnetic fields, low temperatures, high pressure).

In Experimental Hutch 1, the psi diffractometer allows it for diffraction in the vertical (sigma-incident) or horizontal scattering (pi-incident) scattering and full azimuthal control only in the vertical scattering plane. Closed-cycle cryostats covering the temperature range between 1.7 K and 700 K are available. Complete windowless operation allows for REXS experiments in the tender X-ray range (e.g. at the Ru LIII edge).

Experimental hutch 2 is equipped with a heavy-load horizontal Psi-diffractometer allowing for larger and heavier cryostats in the pi-incident geometry only. A 14 T split-coil cryomagnet allows it for high magnetic fields diffraction till 14 Tesla in a temperature range between 2.3 K up to 300 K using the variable temperature insert. A pulse tube cryostat operating between 4 and 300 K is available for high pressure single-crystal diffraction experiments using diamond anvil cells (DACs) where pressure till 30 GPa can be applied and monitored in situ.

Interested users are strongly recommended to contact the beamline scientist in charge prior submitting a proposal for P09 in order to find out the most up-to-date availability of the different set-ups and to discuss the feasibility of any planned experiment.
