About 700 participants from over 25 countries attended the joint DESY Photon Science and European XFEL Users’ Meeting on 30-31 January 2014 in Hamburg. As in the last years current and future users of the DESY light sources and of the European XFEL met to discuss latest developments and opportunities.

In the FLASH and FEL session on Thursday, time-resolved studies of small molecules, bio-molecules, nanoparticles, and surfaces showed the capabilities already available through the use of X-ray free-electron laser radiation. Several satellite meetings, on such diverse topics like X-ray nano-imaging of biological and chemical systems, perspectives of Small Angle X-ray Scattering at DESY, the PETRA III extension XAFS beamline etc. took place in the afternoon.

The Friday session was reserved for status reports from the DESY synchrotron sources and extension project. Topics presented ranged from novel insight into the flow of glasses, liquid-liquid interfaces, strain engineering of semiconductor nanostructures and broad DNA sensing specificity of cGAS. A poster session featuring over 300 presentations followed on Friday afternoon and a vendor exhibition took place at the same time adjacent to the venue.
